Books & Bakes: Vol. 2 - Asparagus Pasta with a Lemon Cream Sauce & 2nd Chance by James Patterson
Mood Music: I'll Fly Away - Alison Krauss (also in the book!)
2nd Chance is the second book in the Women's Murder Club seried by James Patterson, following 1st to Die. I am in that weird category of people who love mystery books but can't handle too much detail about death... I'd say that I enjoy "Crime Light" type of books. I almost had to stop reading 1st to Die because the types of killings were just too disturbing for me, but they get less detailed as the story went on, and I got sucked into the real throughline of this series: four powerhouse women who are solving San Francisco's most difficult crimes, Lindsey (police Lieutenant), Cindy (newspaper reporter), Claire (medical examiner), and Jill (D.A.).
2nd Chance continues the Women's Murder Club's journey to find and stop a serial killer targeting Black police officers and their families. It was so good that I didn't realize that I read half of it in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! I needed to know!
To celebrate finishing that book, I decided to try out a meal that the character Lindsey mentions cooking: her "famous" pasta with asparagus and a lemon cream sauce. I scoured the internet for a recipe with those ingredients and came across this one on Epicurious, and oh my goodness it turned out so decadent! The perfect balance of cream and lemon. Eating it was quickly followed by a "please make this again" from Charlie, too. In the reviews of the recipe, others suggested adding peas and/or pancetta to the dish, but I wanted to try it in its pure form first. While I don't believe that the recipe is missing anything, adding some other of your favorite ingredients would definitely be worth trying. With very few ingredients, it is also a pretty fool-proof recipe for beginner chefs, too!
I'll definitely be continuing along with this book series and hopefully finding some new, wonderful recipe suggestions in them along the way!
